Enterprise App Stores: The New Trend

Nowadays companies are beginning to follow a new trend called BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).  Basically this business strategy allows employees to work with their personal devices such as iPads, iPhones, and Androids.  Along with this new trend businesses are also beginning to create Enterprise App Stores to manage and maintain business application distribution.  An enterprise app store is an application store, much like Google Play or the Apple Market, which is used strictly for specific business applications.  By using an enterprise app store businesses are able to easily choose which applications they want to distribute and have its employees use.  The advantages of an enterprise app store include easy installation of internally developed applications and a lighter load on the IT department, since they would not need to install applications to each device individually.  Not many companies have started using a private app store, but with the BYOD strategy becoming popular an enterprise app store will be the most efficient way to quickly and securely distribute applications.

The idea of enterprise app stores is relatively new so there are a few things a company should be aware of when creating a private app store.

  • The app store should support more than just one OS.  When employees are bringing their own devices to work, it is uncommon that all of them will have the same device so applications should be made for multiple platforms.
  • Applications should be downloadable from a URL and also an app market.
  • Since a business’ data is crucial, security should be one of the most important aspects of an enterprise app store.  A company should not allow their apps to be downloaded from an unsecure network.
  • Applications will be specifically meant for employees so in order to download the required apps authorization should be required by the market.
  • Businesses may want to keep track of all users and devices that have access to their applications
  • There should be clear set of rules and guidelines for publishing applications on the enterprise app store set by the company.

As of now not many companies have created a private app store, but surely soon enough we will see a lot more businesses getting into this trend.
