Zipcar for Scooters and SmartPhones

The fight for better green technology is an ongoing battle. In San Francisco, a local company has devised a way to move about the city that is cheaper than taxis, cars, busses and its technology helps with the environment with less greenhouse gas emission.  The ZipCar for scooters is new way for San Franciscans to maneuver about the city.

From a technology perspective it’s pretty cool idea. Smartphones are becoming more equipped for use in everyday life. Some can remotely start cars, scan credit cards and even scan bar codes so it’s pretty cool in that a phone will allow you to unlock and register your scooter. The phone will act as your dashboard giving you a speedometer and more tools for traveling.  It will be better for commuters and the environment causing less traffic and less CO2 emissions, but has limitations to how far and long it lasts. And it tracks where you go, which can be good and bad depending on your views.  It is very accessible and cheap.

There are a few downsides to this idea. I think that texting while “scootering” will be an issue.  The temptation of your phone will be staring you in the face while you drive. I also don’t see how this is any better than a rent-a- car or even a bike. At least with your bike you don’t have to worry about insurance, returning it, paying for it, and all the other crap you have to do with this scooter system. You aslo still have to go through all the sign-up crap that you do with a rent-a-car, so what’s the point.  I think people should repeat history and go back to more primitive styles of transportation like walking, or riding your bike. It won’t kill anyone to get some exercises in this country and its cheaper and cleaner than anything else. Plus there is unlimited power to be used while walking or riding a bike, and in cities with a dense population it would help tremendously on traffic and pollution.
